The list continues with the regions along Spain’s northwest coast, the Atlantic side. Near Biaritz in France, you cross the border. The first major city is San Sebastian, in the Basque Country. The next major port city is Bilbao, also in the Basque Country. Then, the port city of Santander, in Cantabria. We continue to the next port city, Gijón, in Asturias.
We have arrived in Asturias, a rugged coastline with beautiful hidden sandy beaches, and the Picos de Europa mountain range, shared with Cantabria. The Picos de Europa is located about twenty kilometers from the coast; its highest mountain, Torre de Cerredo, reaches 2,644 meters. If, besides golf, you enjoy hiking, rafting, wild horses (the Asturcan), wolves, or brown bears, Asturias is impressive, imposing, vast, and beautiful.
You’ll also encounter pilgrims. Most are walking to complete the Camino de Santiago.
