Navarre

Navarre borders France on the Atlantic side and extends further south. The capital of Navarre is Pamplona, where the infamous, famous, and much-discussed San Fermin festival is held annually in early July. For eight days, six bulls and several cows are chased through the narrow streets, culminating in the bullring, where the bulls are killed in a bullfight. The San Fermin festival attracts around half a million tourists annually. This so-called Encierro, held in several villages, with Pamplona being the most famous, owes its international popularity to Ernest Hemingway’s book “The Sun Also Rises.” Published in 1926, the book describes the experiences of Jake and several friends on their journey through France to the San Fermin festival. Considered Hemingway’s finest work, it achieved international fame, as did the festival.
